Dr. Prem Chand is a distinguished Consultant Paediatric Neurologist and Epilepsy Specialist. Dr. Prem Chand completed his postgraduate training with honors from Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. He then pursued a three-year sub specialization fellowship in Clinical Neurology and Developmental Pediatrics to gain expertise in handling complicated neurological cases. Subsequently, he became the first international recipient of a Stecker Scholarship at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, USA, where he trained at the hospital’s Epilepsy Center, accredited as a level-four epilepsy program (the highest tier of epilepsy care) by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers.
Upon completing the program, he returned home with a determination to improve the care of children with neurological diseases. His extensive training enabled him to confidently pursue his interests and establish a specialized Pediatric Epilepsy Clinic at AKUH. He also streamlined the hospital’s Pediatric EEG reporting process by assisting in interpreting these pediatric EEGs and the epilepsy program. He later became a certified EEG and Pediatric Epilepsy Specialist by the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE), USA.
Dr. Prem Chand has collaborated with national and international organizations and conducted research on West syndrome (Infantile Epileptic Spasm Syndrome), intellectual disability, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and other neurological disorders. Recently, he was awarded the Bernard D’Souza International Fellowship Award 2023 by the Child Neurology Society, USA (a prestigious award given to only two Pediatric neurologists globally) for his excellence in the field of Pediatric Neurology in Pakistan.
In addition to his clinical and research responsibilities, Dr. Prem Chand has held various administrative roles, including Director of the Pediatric Neurology Fellowship Program, Director of the Pediatric Department Fellowship Program, and Chief of Pediatric Neurology at Aga Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan (AKUH). Under his leadership as Chief of Pediatric Neurology, the AKUH Pediatric Neurology section grew to be the largest in the country.
He is currently a part-time faculty member at AKU in the Faculty of Health Sciences and works as a Developmental Pediatrician and Clinical Neurologist at South City Hospital, Karachi.
Dr. Prem Chand has over 50 national and international research publications and has received several awards and educational citations. He is a trained Pediatric Neurologist and Developmental Pediatrician with a special interest in Epilepsy, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and Pediatric headaches.
